The history of birthday celebration in the twentieth century can be told largely through the evolution of the birthday card, which transformed from a handwritten personal note into a mass-produced commercial object and is now navigating a second transformation back toward personalisation through digital customisation services. The first commercially produced birthday cards appeared in England in the 1850s, made possible by improvements in chromolithographic printing that allowed colourful illustrations to be reproduced cheaply enough for mass sale. By 1910, the American birthday card industry was producing tens of millions of cards annually, and by mid-century the birthday card had become so thoroughly embedded in social expectation that failing to send one to a friend or relative on their birthday constituted a minor but genuine social slight.

Television and the birthday party template

The birthday party as most Western children experienced it throughout the second half of the twentieth century, with party games, a decorated cake, party bags and entertainment structured around a narrative arc of arrival, activities, cake and departure, was substantially shaped by television programming that normalised this template through children's shows and domestic sitcoms. The parties depicted on television were not a reflection of how most people celebrated birthdays but an aspirational model that families incorporated into their own practice, gradually standardising a celebration format that had previously varied significantly between communities, classes and regions. The television birthday party template became self-reinforcing: children who experienced template parties grew up to replicate them for their own children.

The party supply industry

The emergence of specialist party supply retailers in the 1970s and 1980s created new material possibilities for birthday celebrations and simultaneously created new expectations. Before party supply stores, birthday decorations were largely homemade or repurposed from other contexts. After them, themed birthday parties with matching balloons, plates, napkins, banners, tablecloths and favors became the default expectation, particularly for children's parties. The party supply industry is now worth over 10 billion dollars globally and has responded to social media pressure by continuously expanding its range of photogenic decoration options designed to create the kind of visually coherent birthday backgrounds that photograph well for social media posts.

Zoom birthdays and pandemic legacy

The COVID-19 pandemic produced an unexpected laboratory for studying which elements of birthday celebrations are essential and which are merely conventional. Zoom birthday parties, initially experienced as inadequate substitutes for physical gatherings, evolved rapidly as people discovered creative ways to maintain the emotional core of birthday connection across digital infrastructure. Virtual escape rooms, online cooking classes and digital game nights became established birthday formats during lockdown periods and many have persisted beyond them, particularly for geographically dispersed families and friendship groups for whom physical gathering requires significant travel. The pandemic demonstrated that the essential elements of a birthday celebration can be achieved through surprisingly varied means.
